Excruciating cut on nipple in Breastfeeding

Posted by Anonymous on - 1 reply

Hi, I was wondering if you might have some advice on how to treat a damaged nipple. I have a cut near the base of the nipple and each feeding is excruciating. Also at the moment my baby is 2.5 weeks old and cluster feeding all the time. Even when she latches on properly she is continuously coming of the Breast and reattaching badly which do any help. I'm using lanolin cream, putting a bit of breast milk on the cut but no improvement in the last 1.5 weeks. I've got a br sat pump but don't want to start using it so early so as not to interrupt the supply or confuse the baby with the bottle. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Kind regards

Many thanks for your question.

A tear at the base of the nipple can be difficult to heal please
discuss with your GP treatment with the following;
Novogel 7.5cms circle wound dressings, one dressing a day for 7 days,
and Fucidin ointment three times a day. You may also want to discuss
with the GP a swab of the wound to determine if there is any specific
fungal or bacterial infection that may preventing healing with the
measures you have already been using.

I think that as baby is feeding so frequently with frequent delatching
and causing the damage to the breast it would be worthwhile consulting
with a local Lactation Consultant to confirm whether baby has any
tongue mobility issues due to an anterior or posterior tongue tie.

I hope this is helpful.
