HIV and breastfeeding in Breastfeeding

Posted by Anonymous on - 1 reply

I just want to know for how long I can breastfeed my child because of my HIV positive status, and is it possible for me to stop breastfeeding him at 3-4 months? When can I start giving him some medicine that can help to the umbilical cord inside, because if it is cloudy he keeps on crying and moves the stomach.

Thank you for your question. Yes the benefits of breastfeeding outweigh the risks of HIV transmission in breastfeeding mothers in some parts of the world where safe formula milk and water are not readily available.

Thank you for your additional question too. There is over the counter medication for the condition you describe as there is not a problem with the umbilical cord inside baby's tummy. If you feel baby has colic or gas perhaps consider using a medicine for this.

Hope this helps,
