Sleepy baby difficult to breastfeed in Breastfeeding

Posted by Anonymous on - 1 reply

I have a six day old baby girl. She weighed 7lb when born. I am breastfeeding, howeveer baby is very sleepy and we have to wake her that takes ages for her to feed. She falls asleep on the breast and is not putting on any weight. I am worried. I wake her every 2 hours but it is so stressful to feed her she just wants to sleep. Is there anything I can do. Ss he is so tiny. Many thanks

Thank you for your question about feeding your 6 day old baby.

I am assuming that you are receiving midwifery care and that they are assisting you with feeding? If not, it sounds as though despite waking baby every 2 hours she is too tired to feed? I would suggest that you begin to express some breastmilk and give her 10-20 mls before you put her to the breast.

I attach 2 downloads you may find helpful, if baby doesnt begin to feed better with some expressed breastmilk before a breastfeed then she will need to be seen by your doctor.

Hope this is helpful,
