Thank you for your question about Tattoos and breastfeeding.

There is no clear advice that can be given about whether it is entirely safe to have a tattoo whilst breastfeeding.

The ink molecules are too large to pass into breastmilk, but there is a risk of the mother acquiring a HIV or Hepatitis infection if the Tattoo artist doesn't use single use equipment, also some Tattoo artists prefer not to ink breastfeeding or pregnant mothers.

I think that if you are certain about the sterility of the artist's equipment and they are happy to do it then it is a choice for you whether to go ahead and have one.

To be entirely certain you may wish to wait a few more months until baby has finished breastfeeding.

Hope this is helpful.
