Thank you for your message. It sounds like you have achieved so much in breastfeeding your son for 19 months. How disappointing and frustrating to have this happen to you after all this time.

I wonder how you're feeling now? Generally nipple soreness would indicate that there is an issue with positioning. Sometimes experienced mums and babies are understandably very relaxed about positioning and can perhaps not notice when babies slip off or go on in an awkward way. By really going back to basics and focusing on your baby's position you may notice an improvement. Using a nipple balm may also be helpful too. A Certified Lactation Consultant would be able to review all these areas with you.

I'm also wondering from your description of not feeling well whether you might be experiencing mastitis symptoms. Are there any lumpy or hard areas in the breast? If so, the warmth you describe along with massage and trying to breastfeed or express would all be helpful. If you are experiencing flu-like symptoms you may need to see a GP for antibiotics.

I hope that this information is helpful to you and that you feel much better soon.

Best wishes
