Breast-feeding a 2 month old in Breastfeeding

Posted by Anonymous on - 1 reply

Nursing was going well for several weeks until my baby started to pull away from my breast after latching. when he does this he still seems hungry but does not seem to want to take the whole breast. It also seems like he's not able to open his mouth too wide-small mouth perhaps? He seems content even though he sometimes slips off and loses the latch. Why is this suddenly happening?

Hi thank you for your email and questions about your baby's present breastfeeding behaviours.

The behaviors you describe could be due to a number of issues including:

Baby needing a winding break, by pulling away he may want to adjust his latch to a shallow one to enable him to do non nutritive sucking.

Baby gag guarding, losing latch or becoming easily fatigued at the breast secondary to poor attachment or tongue tie

Baby may becoming more efficient at feeding and doesnt need to feed for as long as previously.

Oral thrush, sore throat, blocked nose or ear infections can make it painful/difficult for baby to feed, discuss with your gp if you feel this is the case

It would also be a good plan to consult with a lactation consultant or other breastfeeding specialist who could observe an entire feed and see exactly what the problem is
