Sore Nipples in Breastfeeding

Posted by Anonymous on - 1 reply

My nipples are so imcredibly sore that sometimes I want to give up breastfeeding. My daughter, who is only 6 days old, obviously had a problem latching from the beginning. I dread the next time I have to feed her because it hurts so bad. I have tried readjusting her but it doesn't work. She has a very small mouth and I have big nipples/areolas so I don't know if that has something to do with it. But I definitely need help. I have scabs and they're always throbbing, when she starts to suck it's toe curling pain. I don't know what to do, please help.

Hi thank you for your email and for telling me about the problems you are having at present. There is an obvious problem with baby's ability at present to accommodate your nipples in the correct place in their mouth. Please discuss with your midwife or gp the prescription of some novogel 7.5 circle wound dressings and perhaps some fucidin cream if they are scabbed.
Please also ask your midwife or a breastfeeding specialist to show you how to shape the breast when latching, or how to use a nipple shield until the nipples are healed or more comfortable. If it is too painful to feed then express your milk and ask the MW/BFC to show you how to syringe or cup feed baby so that they dont get used to a bottle. Finally the problems you are having sound like the problem associated with tongue tie, ask the MW/BFC to check.
